(500) Days of Summer

Marc Webb · 2009

A love story assembled from memory: the highlights, the warning signs and everything we edit out afterwards.

What stayed

The storytelling and the way it reshapes the same relationship through different moments and perspectives. and that damn tree art that went through a full season in that summer. took some time to realise, film’s central metaphor is not really that Tom or Summer “changed.” It is that Tom’s image of Summer changed once he stopped seeing her through his own projection. Like that quote goes: "I am not what I think I am and I am not what you think I am. I am what I think ‘you think’ i am."

Why I recommend it

It is bittersweet, heartbreaking, and inventive without feeling like a gimmick. It captured the distance between the person we loved and the story we later tell ourselves about them. Kinda meta. Kinda sad.
